Frequently Asked Questions

What are my basic employment rights in the UK?
All UK workers are entitled to: National Minimum Wage, 5.6 weeks paid holiday, itemized payslips, safe working conditions, protection from discrimination, and rest breaks. Employees (not self-employed) get additional rights including unfair dismissal protection, statutory sick pay, maternity/paternity rights, and redundancy pay.
How much holiday am I entitled to?
The statutory minimum is 5.6 weeks (28 days for full-time workers) per year. Part-time workers get a pro-rata amount. This can include bank holidays. Use our Holiday Entitlement Calculator to work out your exact entitlement based on your working pattern.
What is Statutory Sick Pay (SSP)?
SSP is £118.75 per week (2026) paid by your employer for up to 28 weeks if you’re off sick. From April 2026, SSP is paid from day 1 with no earnings threshold and 80% earnings for low-paid workers under the new Employment Rights Act.
How is maternity pay calculated?
Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) is paid for 39 weeks: first 6 weeks at 90% of your average earnings (no limit), then 33 weeks at £187.18/week or 90% of earnings (whichever is lower). You need 26 weeks continuous service by the 15th week before your due date.
What redundancy pay am I entitled to?
Statutory redundancy pay is based on your age, length of service, and weekly pay (capped at £700/week in 2026). You get: 0.5 week’s pay per year if under 22, 1 week’s pay per year if 22-40, and 1.5 week’s pay per year if 41+. Maximum 20 years service counts. You must have 2+ years continuous service to qualify.
How much notice do I have to give?
Statutory minimum notice depends on your service: 1 week if employed 1 month-2 years, then 1 week per year of service (up to 12 weeks maximum after 12 years). Your contract may require more. During notice, you’re entitled to full pay. Use our Notice Period Calculator for your specific situation.
Does unpaid leave affect my tax?
Yes! Unpaid leave reduces your taxable income, so you pay less income tax and National Insurance. This means the actual cost is less than the gross salary deduction. For example, a £500 gross deduction only costs a basic-rate taxpayer around £340 in actual take-home pay reduction. Use our Unpaid Leave Impact Calculator to see the real cost.
What are the new employment rights changes in 2026?
Major changes in 2026: Day 1 rights (no qualifying period for unfair dismissal), SSP from day 1 (no waiting days), no earnings threshold for SSP, enhanced parental rights, right to predictable contract terms, protection from unfair dismissal for pregnancy, and stronger flexible working rights. The Employment Rights Act 2024 introduces the biggest reforms in decades.
